Caringbah

The Sutherland Shire, which guards the southern flanks of the George's River and Botany Bay, is no shrinking violet when it comes to celebrating its status as the birthplace of the nation.

Indeed, the shire fairly bristles with geographical features and landmarks named in honour of Captain James Cook, who first planted the English flag on the shores of Botany Bay in 1780.

History, of course, reminds us that Governor Phillip preferred Port Jackson to Botany Bay as the site for the first penal colony, but Sutherland remains a very special part of Sydney.

With Port Hacking defining the southern border, Sutherland is virtually surrounded by water and its suburbs are some of the most desirable in the metropolitan region.

Visitors have the enviable choice of super surf beaches in Cronulla and Wanda, a wide selection of bay beaches in such picturesque settings as Bundeena and Jibbon at the northern gateway to the Royal National Park, and the boating and fishing pleasures of Port Hacking and its seemingly endless chain of scenic bays and inlets guarding the mouth of the Port Hacking River.
