Peakhurst

Flanked by Salt Pan Creek and the Lime Kiln Bay reach of the Georges River, Peakhurst is something of an island suburb in the municipality of Hurstville in Sydney's south.

The creek and the river is richly endowed with boat access ramps and waterside parks most of which are reserved for public recreational use.

It is an area of Sydney which is particularly rich in reserves and parkland, much of which hugs the creek and river shorelines.

One of the municipality"s standout buildings is the Centennial Baking Museum which occupies two impressive terraces on Forest Road. The building was used as a bakery for almost 100 years until the premises were taken over by the Hurstville Historical Society which opened the museum in 1944.

Four years later the operation was taken over by the Hurstville City Council and is now used as a centre for permanent and temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibitions include an Aboriginal Gallery, a display reflecting domestic life in the 19th and 20th centuries and, naturally, an historic baking exhibition.

Botany Bay, the southern beaches and large shopping centres are all within comfortable driving distance and there are major road and rail links to the Sydney Central Business District.
