Lakemba

A south-western suburb, about 15km from Sydney's CBD, Lakemba straddles busy Canterbury Road, one of the city's main arteries.

It is a place of increasingly-intensive housing development and, like a lot of Sydney suburbs these days, has developed a distinctly multicultural character, which is reflected in the proliferation of ethnic restaurants and shopping alternatives.

This was one of the first districts in Australia to be heavily felled of timber by our early settlers. In 1905 much of Lakemba was forest country. A couple of kilometres down the road is one of Sydney's famous metropolitan racecourses, Canterbury Park. Dean"s tannery in Wangee Road was one of the early industries, while charcoal burners were also making hand-made bricks at a small brickyard.

One C. Brack looked after a nursery owned by Horton"s , the seed merchant of Sydney. A golf club was formed about 1912 with the members playing on the paddocks used by the Fire Brigade Board as a spelling area for its horses.
