Kogarah

The south-eastern Sydney suburb of Kogarah, about 15 kilometres from the CBD, stretches west from the shores of Botany Bay, just a kilometre or two from Kingsford Smith Airport.

The home of the now-amalgamated St George-Illawarra rugby league team, they are football mad out this way and built a 'palace' to the sport in their architecturally-challenging St George Leagues Club on the Princes Highway.

Kogarah is also home to the massive St George Hospital, one of the biggest in Sydney. While the name of Kogarah is very Australian - being a derivative of the Aboriginal name for 'place of reeds' - the suburb is today culturally diverse with two in every five people coming from a non-English-speaking background.

The municipality of Kogarah was proclaimed in 1885, but it wasn"t until 1886 that the first municipal council was elected. The first meeting was held at the Gardners Arms Hotel, now St Joseph"s Girls High School and previously the site of St George Leagues Club.
