Beaumaris

One of Melbourne's most select addresses, Beaumaris is a Port Phillip Bayside suburb 20km south-east of the city. The sea and a ring of golf courses formed by Royal Melbourne, Sandringham, Cheltenham and Victoria clubs creates a peninsula which adds to the suburb's exclusivity.

The name stems from one of the region's original pastoral properties, 32ha Beaumaris Park. Curiously, Beaumaris Park was owned by James Moysey, who, although a Devon man, took the name from the Welsh coastal resort where Edward I built Beau Maurais Castle.

Mind you, the suburb has been something of a pacesetter in unusual names. In the 1930s, the Black Rock-Beaumaris Progress League promoted 'delightful walks along rugged cliffs overlooking sapphire blue waters and among inland wild flowers', which, it seems, grew in profusion in corners known as Honeysuckle Dell and Dingley Dell.

On a bluff of land flanked by Beaumaris Bay and the HMVS Cerberus Breakwater, the suburb is not only within walking distance of some fine golf courses, but its dress-circle opens on to some rewarding fishing grounds.
