A pleasant suburb straddling the Nepean Highway in the south of the Melbourne metropolitan area, Highett has major road and rail links to both the city and the resorts and fishing towns and wineries of the Mornington Peninsula.

The closest Port Phillip Bay beaches are about 2km away, while Sandringham Municipal, Victoria and Royal Melbourne golf courses occupy Melbourne's famous golfing sand belt on Highett's southern boundary.

Highett is part of Kingston City Council and a snapshot of the municipality indicates that sport and water recreation are community priorities with 12 world class golf courses, excellent swimming beaches and reserves, five sailing and eight life-saving clubs, a large aquatic centre, the Patterson River marina and a chain of major parks, gardens and wetlands.

The vast Southland Shopping Centre and Moorabbin Airport lie just to the south-west of Highett. Melbourne's second city, Dandenong, and the significant Edithvale Wetlands which environmentalists want restored to all its former glory, are both within comfortable driving distance of Highett.
