Bentleigh

A south-eastern residential suburb of Melbourne, Bentleigh was originally part of the bayside suburb of Brighton. Now a highly-desirable, expensive residential address, the Brighton district was first opened up in 1840 when the British Government"s Land and Emigration Commision offered 21 square kilometres of land at the equivalent price of 2 dollars an acre.

Bentleigh became a suburb in its own right in 1908 when it was renamed in honour of the Victorian Premier, Sir Thomas Bent.

Bentleigh is within comfortable driving or public transport distance of the large Southland Shopping Centre and the highly regarded twin golf courses of Metropolitan and Huntingdale flank the suburb's eastern border.

Today Bentleigh is just a few minutes from Melbourne"s popular Brighton Beach which, of course, is distinguished by the colourful, privately owned bathing boxes that line the shore.

Nearby major roads provide access to the city, to the Mornington Peninsula, the Dandenongs and Gippsland. Moorabbin Airport lies just to the south of Bentleigh.
