Highton

An outer western suburb of Geelong, Highton is at the centre of a high growth area on the southern banks of the Barwon River.

In spite of the growth, however, the area retains its spacious charm thanks mainly to an expansive green belt which flanks both sides of the river. The river and the green areas combine to make Highton one of the most desirable, up-market suburbs in Geelong.

King Lloyd Reserve hugs the northern shore, while the southern bank is protected by a huge sweep of green, open reserve which embraces Barron Valley Park, Belmont Common and Barron Valley Golf Club. Walking tracks snake through the entire parkland.

One of Geelong"s gracious homes, the National Trust-protected Barwon Grange, lies just across the river from Highton. Set in superb gardens, the elegant edifice was built in 1856 for wealthy merchant and ship owner, Jonathon Porter O"Brien.

The city and the main Geelong beach chain on Port Phillip's Corio Bay are within 10 minutes driving distance. The bay is also Geelong's primary boat launching area to access the Port Phillip fishing grounds.
