Cheltenham

One of Melbourne's southern suburbs, Cheltenham is separated from Moorabbin Airport by Kingston Heath Golf Course. Cheltenham is home, too, to other nationally known golf courses such as Victoria and Royal Melbourne.

The large Southland shopping centre is within a few minutes drive and so, too, is the aquatic playground of the Patterson River and Patterson Lakes which have direct access to Port Phillip Bay.

The famous beachside resorts and vineyards of the Mornington Peninsular are within comfortable driving distance of Cheltenham.

The Melbourne road and rail systems conveniently link Cheltenham to both the city, the Dandenongs and Gippsland.

Cheltenham lies at the heart of the Bayside City and a slice of Victoria that has proved irresistible to artists for almost 150 years.

To celebrate the region"s enduring connection with some of Australia"s finest painters, the council has established a brochure-supported Coastal Arts Trail which identifies various land and seascapes with an unbroken chain of superb paintings ranging from Henry Burn"s Brighton Beach (1862) to John Percival"s Boatshed at Beaumaris (1945).

The brochure lists 37 paintings, each of them complete with an image of the artist"s work. The council is constantly adding to the trail of paintings.
