Moorabbin

Colonial food bowl for old Melbourne town, the suburb of Moorabbin to the city's south has long since developed renown as the protector of the regional, Kingston Arts Centre. Since 1968 it has also been the guardian of one of Victoria's treasures, a Wurlitzer organ. Custom-made at a cost of 25,000 pounds ($50,000) by the Rudolf Wurlitzer Company of New York for the State Theatre, the organ arrived in Melbourne in 1928. In 1968 the Theatre Organ Society oversaw its move and installation in the Moorabbin Town Hall. Separated from the Port Phillip Bay shoreline by the neighbouring suburb of Sandringham, Moorabbin straddles both the Nepean Highway and the southern rail line. Moorabbin is part of the City of Kingston, a municipality which boasts world class golf courses such as Kingston Heath and Woodlands, a chain of Port Phillip Bay beaches and attendant parks, cafes and restaurants and a network of bike trails which snakes through roads, reserves and along the waterfront. The regular marine action includes bay cruises, sailing, wind-surfing, jet ski-ing, safe swimming and fishing.
