Edithvale
The bayside Melbourne suburb of Edithvale is at the centre of a large environmental movement to drum up funds and support to win back the local wetlands.
Before white settlement in the region, the Seaford Wetlands stretched over 4,500ha from Mordialloc to Frankston and west to Dandenong. Today the wetlands are confined to 400ha on Edithvale's western boundary.
Despite the drastic encroachment of development, the remaining wetlands pocket continues to support an extraordinarily diverse range of birdlife that includes 17 species of waterfowl which migrate annually from the northern hemisphere to the area.
Prominent among the regular, international visitors is Latham"s snipe which breeds in grassland on the Japanese islands of Honshu and Hokkaido before heading south for the Melbourne spring in August and September.
The Friends of the Edithvale-Seaforth Wetlands lobby group is working toward protection and improvement of the natural ecosystem which is listed on the Register of the National Estate.
