Bindoon

Bindoon is an hour drive north of Perth, within the beautiful Chittering Shire. The shire also includes Muchea, Lower Chittering and Wannamal. The best seasons for visiting the area are winter and spring. Visitors will see vineyards, orange groves, wineries, farms, beautiful countryside of rolling hills with a river valley and other attractions. Bird life and wildflowers are abundant and a popular drawcard for visitors in spring. The first European settlement of the area occurred in the mid 1840s. William Locke Brockman was the first to take up land in the present shire, and a river running through the area was later named after him - the Brockman River. The ruins of his old house can still be seen at a point just north of the local hotel. 'Bindoon', originally the name of a house, means 'place where yams grow' in the local Aboriginal dialect. A number of good quality bed and breakfast and farm stay accommodations are available in the area ranging from budget to luxury. The town has an excellent bakery and good shopping facilities. An Arts and Crafts Centre and a museum are also open to the public. In the centre of town is the Chittering Visitor Centre where travellers can obtain information on local events and arrange accommodation and sightseeing. The Chittering Valley Wine Trail covers a distance of some 70 kilometres from Lower Chittering to Gingin and includes seven wineries, each with their own unique character and style, each dedicated to giving you an exceptional wine experience. Most of the wineries offer light lunches or cheese and picnic platters and there is an excellent a la carte restaurant offering a unique regional food and wine experience. Friendly cellar door staff will welcome you and will be happy to share their local knowledge of things to see and do.
