Koorda

Just under three hours drive northeast of Perth is the wheatbelt town of Koorda. The predominantly farming community dedicates itself to growing wheat, coarse grains and sheep. Early in September, Koorda hosts its annual Agricultural Show, which brings together past and present Koorda residents, along with a large number of visitors. The show features many agricultural events and displays, including the 'corn dollies', the emblem of the shire. Koorda's Museum takes its theme from the building's origin as a hospital in the years before World War II and an interesting display of old hospital and surgical equipment is featured in one of the former wards. There is also a large display of early farming machinery and pioneer homestead effects. Cottage crafts are on display and for sale at the Red Cross/Craft Shop situated in Allenby Street. Koorda is the regional office for Cooperative Bulk Handling's cereal grain transport system for the surrounding area. A tour of the modern complex will give an appreciation of the processes involved in the receiving and handling of the vast quantity of grain grown here. Mollerin Rock, Newcarlbeon, Badgerin Rock and Moningarin, all fairly close to town are picturesque outcrops of granite each with its own peculiar mini-environment of wildflowers, birds and small animals. Most have picnic or barbecue facilities. Moningarin has the extra attraction of gnamma holes, these are rock pools formed in granite that collect water during the winter months. The holes were traditionally used by the indigenous inhabitants of the region.
