Nyabing

At the centre of the Great Southern region, about 338 km south-east of Perth and about 61 km east of Katanning, the country surrounding Nyabing is renowned for its quality merino sheep and its fine pastures, which also support grain growing and cattle grazing. Shire records tell us that in the year 2000 the wool clip produced nearly two million kilos from 414,000 sheep while wheat accounted for 141,000 tonnes and barley 55,000 tonnes. And farmers also had 11,000 pigs on their books.

To the east of the Nyabing township is a string of shallow lakes - Lake Magenta, Lake Pingarup, Lake Grace South, Lake Grace North and Lake Joy. This is wildflower country, too, so it's a good place to be between July and September when they splash their colours about. The "Big Smoke" of Katanning, 61 km down the road, is the centre of this prosperous agricultural district.
