Tammin

The wheat belt town of Tammin is located two hours drive east of Perth. It is said to derive its name from a small marsupial found in the area, the Tammar. Hunts Well is a historical site located a few kilometres south of the town. Explorer Charles Hunt built wells and dams along his early exploration route which opened up the goldfields for future stockmen and other explorers. Yorkrakine Rock is an unusual granite outcrop located 26 kilometres north of Tammin; at 341 metres high it provides good climbing. A strip of native flora surrounds the outcrops which is one of the largest of its kind in Western Australia. It is another important haven for native flora and fauna. Charles Gardiner Reserve, with an area of 600 hectares 14 kilometres south of Tammin, is best viewed during spring and winter when it is ablaze with a wide variety of wildflowers, some of which are not found anywhere else in the state. A district herbarium is established in the old railway station. This enables tourists and landcare groups to identify local flora and assist in collection of seeds of endangered species. Landcare Education Centre (TALEC) was established in 1991 to cater for Landcare education of all age groups. Air-conditioned accommodation for up to forty two people is used by schools and by people interested in all aspects of Landcare. The facility is available for visitors or for field trips with a bus provided. The Tammin Hydrology Model and Amphitheatre - Kadjininy Kep features a working model depicting a typical wheatbelt landscape showing how farming land is being lost to salinity along with some solutions. There is an amphitheatre for outdoor concerts, theatre and seminars. Shady grassed areas with barbeque facilities are also available. Accommodation and meals are available at the local hotel.
