Kulin

Kulin is a convenient stopover for travellers between Perth and Esperance. While in this five star tidy town, don't miss a visit to the excellent local herbarium. Jilakin Rock, 24 kilometres east of Kulin, is a spectacular grey monolith overlooking a lake. 20km east of Kulin on Holt Rock Road (follow the Tin Horse Highway), you will find a shady picnic spot at the base of Jilakin Rock. An easy climb to the top of the rock provides spectacular views of Jilakin Lake and the surrounding wheat belt. Wildflowers form a wonderful display during August and September. Jilakin Rock also boasts the most isolated known stand of jarrah (150 kilometres from the main jarrah belt), surviving on the water run off and quality soils at the base of the rock. It is here that the popular Kulin Bush Races are held every October, attracting visitors from all over the state. Further east are the unusual formations called Buckley's Breakaway. These pinkish white sculptured rocks make a stark contrast against the red brown gravel caps. Kulin Shire has an abundance of wonderful wildflower reserves. They are as rich and varied as any in the world. Hopkins Nature Reserve comes to life in early spring and is an extremely important flora conservation area. North Jitarning Nature Reserve has a picnic area and is perfect to walk through and experience many different vegetation areas. Dragon Rocks Nature Reserve is another great attraction in the area. Enjoy all the attractions and stay overnight at a farm stay near the town of Pingaring.
