Yealering

In a mixed farming area about 250km south-east of Perth, Yealering is a small town with a lake of the same name nearby and a pleasant little nature reserve called Sewell's Rock about 14km out of town.

The land surrounding the lake was first released in the 1870s and, before the town site was established in 1907, Yugoslav migrants began a market garden. Yealering Lake was a valuable source of fresh water for the settlers. Community picnics and sporting days, for which the town became renowned, were held on the banks of the lake, and in dry years horse races were run on the lake bed.

In a picturesque setting with picnic and barbecue facilities, Lake Yealering is an ideal place for a variety of water sports, including water skiing, swimming, sailing and windsurfing, and there are also nature walks through the surrounding bushland.

About 30km to the south is the town of Wickepin, which might have continued in relative obscurity if it hadn't been for a man called Albert Facey. Facey lived and worked in Wickepin, built a house 15km out of town, and made it all so very memorable in a book called A Fortunate Life which became an enormous bestseller in Australia.
