Gunbower

The small Murray River town of Gunbower is best known as the gateway to Australia's largest inland island and a significant wildlife sanctuary, Gunbower Island.

The island has been created by a pincer formed by the Murray River and Gunbower Creek and extends over 50km in length from Koondrook to Torrumbarry Weir, which is a popular rendezvous for water-skiers and picnickers.

The island supports protected populations of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and 160 different species of birds, and is an idyllic location for camping, canoeing, a spot of bushwalking or bird-watching.

The island lowlands are dominated by swamps and huge river redgums, while box forests hold the higher ground.

Terrick Terrick State Park, which offers stunning views from the summit of Mt Terrick Terrick, lies just to the south, while the twin riverport resorts of Echuca and Moama are within a short drive to the south-east.
