Leitchville

The Murray River Valley village of Leitchville is in the heart of wetlands that not only harbour vast numbers of waterfowl and native animals, but provide a window into Australia's Aboriginal past.

The township is only a few kilometres from Kow Swamp which, in the 1960s, yielded a huge amount of fossilised evidence that the there were at least two physically distinct Aboriginal races extant in Australia during the last Ice Age.

The Leitchville approach to Kow Swamp, whose wetlands support colonies of several species of waterfowl and an abundant stock of catchable fish, opens on to a park complete with picnic facilities on the eastern shore of the swamp.

Leitchville also borders Gunbower Creek and Gunbower Island, a 50km long natural sanctuary that supports large colonies of kangaroos, emus, goannas, possums, snakes and more than 160 bird species. The fauna live and breed in the island's swamps, river red gums and box forests. The entire area is a fisherman's paradise.
