Stanhope

A dairy town of about 600 in the Goulburn Valley, Stanhope is set on the Midland Highway, 23km west of Tatura, in the Campaspe Shire.

The area west of the Goulburn River was opened up in the 1860s by James Winter who owned or leased a number of pastoral estates and built the family homestead, Stanhope, on a 6000ha holding in 1867.

Among the ex-World War I Diggers who took up soldier settlements was a man destined to become a powerful figure in the Federal Parliament, John (Black Jack) McEwen, leader of the Country Party and briefly Prime Minister after the drowning of Harold Holt off Portsea in 1967.

A short drive north leads to Kyabram and the Fauna Park. Set in 55ha of wetlands and plains, the park, which has won five tourism and environmental awards in the past four years, is home to more than 55 species of birds and animals.

The Golden Cow dairy centre and mini-farm at Tongala, provides information, souvenirs and meals you can wash down with 'the world's best milkshakes'.
