Strathmerton

A Murray River town 230km north of Melbourne, Strathmerton takes its name from early pastoralist Benjamin Boyd who took the Gaelic word for wide river valley, Strath, and added the Merton from his family's home in Scotland when renaming Ulupna Station.

As it happens, Ulupna lives on in the name of the Murray River island reserve which features several river beaches and a flora and fauna sanctuary.

Immediately to the west lie Barmah State Park and State Forest which protect the largest stand of red gum in Victoria. On a river beach within the reserve area, a caravan park, where you can meet resident koalas and kangaroos, provides a comfortable base for bush-walkers, horse trail riders and fishermen.

A 20km drive south takes you to the large irrigation centre of Nurmurkah which hosts a permanent steam and vintage machinery display and attracts flower lovers from far and wide for the annual Easter Rose Festival.
