Tallygaroopna
A few minutes up the Goulburn Valley Road from the fruit bowl capital of Shepparton, the small town with the musical name of Tallygaroopna sits just to the east of Bunbartha and Loch Garry. Set in a state forest, the loch is accessed by a clearly-signed unsealed road and is a pleasant spot for a picnic. The lake is a sanctuary for several species of waterfowl which feed off small fish and nest in the reeds and rushes which hug the shoreline. Fed by the Goulburn River, the lake is a popular swimming and boating retreat and for fishermen on the trail of yellowbelly, redfin and catfish. The original giant Tallygaroopna pastoral station was opened up in 18400's by Edward Khull, who sold two years later to Sherbourne Sheppard, who, in turn, gave his name to the large regional city of Shepparton. Although the station was broken up into small holdings in the 1870s, imposing Tallygaroopna Homestead still commands sweeping views of the Goulburn River. Home to the southern hemisphere's largest cannery, SPC, Shepparton is graced by some outstanding public buildings and an art gallery whose collection includes works by Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton, Arthur Boyd, Margaret Preston and Rupert Bunny.
