Nathalia
The world's largest red gum forest of the Barmah State Forest, which flanks the northern border of Nathania, is the dominant landmark in this part of the state 220km north of Melbourne. The 29,500ha forest and its waterways are not only popular with anglers, boating, kayaking, bush-walking, camping and day-tripper picnickers, but it is an important sanctuary for emus, kangaroos, reptiles, amphibians, wild horses and 206 identified species of birds. The presence of canoe trees and middens testify to the area's enduring significance to Aboriginals over many centuries. Within the town itself the Broken Creek walking track follows a selection of trails along the stream's banks past waterside homes, the weir, a lookout the odd fishing spot and a variety of natural flora that includes red gum, box and wattle. Woodbine Homestead opens its gardens to group tours from September 1 to May 31. The garden's basic trees and shrubs are interspersed with perennials and annuals and browsing ducks and hens. Finches, parrots and canaries chatter and sing in aviaries.
