Lockington

Half an hour's drive north from the Murray River paddle-steamer mecca of Echuca/Moama, the small rural town of Lockington is at the centre of a thriving agricultural area producing milk, fruit and tomatoes.

Lockington is in the catchment of the Campaspe River which, for reasons known only to himself, NSW Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell named in 1836 for Alexander the Great's favourite concubine.

The major regional town of Rochester is the birthplace of legendary cyclist Sir Hubert Opperman, the man who rode his trusty Malvern Star to records across the world and then went on to a successful political and diplomatic career.

Rochester remembers its favourite son, who was still cycling into his 90s, through the Oppy Museum and a monument, while the Post Office has a special postmark in his honour.

Bendigo, with its elegant colonial buildings, its rich goldfields heritage and exotic Chinese colonial connection is only an hour"s drive south from Lockington.
