Numurkah

The sizeable Goulburn Valley Highway town of Nurmurka sits alongside Broken Creek, just 25km north of Shepparton. Irrigation helps keep the fruit trees, dairy herds and vines content and you can sample the local fare at a number of regional outlets including varietal table and fortified wines at Monichino's, 8km north, and at the Kraft cheese factory at nearby Strathmerton. Squatters first moved into the district in the late 1830s and although land selectors followed 10 years later, rural development didn't really kick into gear until 700 World War I veterans took advantage of the Murray Valley Soldier Settlement program in the early 1920s. Today the town supports a population of 3500 most of whom are dependent in one way or another on the fruit industry. Lawbreakers are no longer dealt with in Numurkah, but the ornate, brick court house remains the standout building on the main thoroughfare of Melville Street. Built in the late 1880s, it is now home to Court House Crafts. Off the same street on the banks of the creek, visitors can relax in the Nurmurkah Ruse Gardens and the Louis Hamon Gardens.
