Blackwood

The southern suburb of Blackwood is in the heart of Adelaide's outer metropolitan parkland. It is tucked between the Shepherds Hill Recreational Park and one of the most popular reserves in the state, Belair National Park.

Belair's generous picnic and recreational areas - set among bushland that harbours a wide range of bird and native animal life - is a natural magnet to both Adelaide families and visitors.

To the immediate north and east of Blackwood are Brownhill Creek Recreation Park and one of the city's environmental gems, Cleland Conservation Park, which has been designed primarily to familiarise people with the native flora and fauna of the region.

The park also includes a restored Old Government House which was built in the 1860s as a vice-regal retreat from the summer heat. Within 20 years, the vice-regents chose to summer over in the Marble Hill mansion in nearby Ashton.

Razed in a 1955 bushfire, Marble Hill has since been restored and is open to the public on Wednesday and at weekends.

The neighbouring suburb of Coromandel Valley was first settled by deserters from HMS Coromandel - one of the first ships into the fledgling port of Adelaide.
