Marion

One of Adelaide's southern suburbs, Marion is within comfortable driving range of two of the outer metropolitan area's two major parks - Belair National Park and Cleland Conservation Park. The centrepiece of Belair, which is only a few kilometres east of Marion, is Old Government House, which was the summer residence of early State Governors. The house is set in wide expanses of bushland, picnic areas and a children's playground. At Cleland you can wander freely among kangaroos, wallabies, emus and waterfowl and, every now and again, eyeball a koala. The park also has a Nightwalk, on which visitors can 'stalk' Australia's nocturnal native animals, and Aboriginal trails. Marion is also within short driving distance of some of metropolitan Adelaide's more popular southern beaches, including historic Glenelg, where the South Australian colonial adventure began with the arrival of HMS Buffalo in the high summer of 1836, Somerton Park, Brighton and Seacliff. Little more than a rural village dominated by market gardens 50 years ago , Marion is now a highly desirable, inner-residential suburb in the municipality of Sturt, the Switched on City.
