Morphett Vale

Morphett Vale virtually marks the point where Adelaide's southern urban sprawl ends and the rolling green hills characteristic of the Fleurieu Peninsula's Southern Vales begin. A few kilometres to the south, the bridge over the Onkaparinga River is the gateway to the McLaren Vale where the region's huge wine industry began with the planting of the first vines in 1838. Morphett Vale is also within comfortable striking distance of the peninsula's celebrated ocean-side resorts such as Victor Harbour and Port Elliott, the aquatic playground of Lake Alexandrina on the mouth of the Murray River and a chain of ocean beaches. It is also only a 45-minute drive to Cape Jervis where you can connect with the Kangaroo Island car ferry. Although a major highway has transformed Morphett Vale into the commuter age, a little delving will lead the heritage-minded visitor to such historic landmarks as John Knox Presbyterian and St Hilarys Anglican churches, both of which date back to 1855. Interestingly, St Hilarys was designed as a courthouse before the church took possession.
