Stepney

Flanked to the north by the River Torrens, the inner-eastern suburbs of St Peters and Stepney are very much part of the central Adelaide cultural scene.

The artistic hub of the precinct is the Jam Factory Contemporary Craft and Design Centre whose studios are open to the public seven days a week.

Visitors can watch artists in residence at work on the easel, sculptors coaxing iron into creative new shapes, potters moulding their clay and glass-blowers using a tube to blow a red-hot molten blob into an exotic piece of glassware.

And while in the clutches of the muses, why not head into town to catch a free, lunch-time chamber music concert in Rundle Mall or drop in on the Tandanya National Aboriginal Institute for an artistic taste of the world's oldest surviving culture. A master musician demonstrates the haunting tonal qualities of the didgeridoo daily at noon in the institute which also displays contemporary and traditional paintings and craftwork from all over Australia.
