Somerton Park

The seaside suburb of Somerton Park is within a few minutes of two of Adelaide's most popular metropolitan beaches, historic Glenelg and Brighton.

Befitting its status as the birthplace of the state, Glenelg has a rich and obvious heritage, but its historic significance sits comfortably with modern diversions such as superb restaurants and Rodney Fox's Shark Museum.

Fox, of course, knows more about sharks than most, having narrowly survived a 1963 brush with a 3.6m white pointer whose mauling needed 462 stitches to repair.

Like Glenelg, Brighton is a safe, sandy beach and is backed by more tempting restaurants and craft shops which specialise in glass, driftwood, shell and ceramic giftware.

The first Brighton jetty, which was built in 1886, gave immense pleasure to fishermen and day-trippers for more than 100 years before it succumbed to the sea and wind in 1994. The new concrete jetty was opened in 1996, complete with a 25m telecommunications tower designed to resemble a ship"s mast and modern art works reflecting the elements of light, wind and water.
