Reynella

More than 160 years have passed since Devonshire migrant John Reynell planted vine cuttings he had brought with him from the Cape of Good Hope on his newly acquired property 20km south of Adelaide. Planted in 1838, the grapes produced their first wine in 1842, supporting claims that Reynell was Australia"s first winemaker.

Most of his holding has long since been swallowed by Adelaide's urban sprawl, but vines still grow in a small corner of the original property to mark the birthplace of the South Australian wine industry.

Today Chateau Reynella in the suburb of Reynella is the national headquarters of Australia's second largest wine producer, BRL Hardy Ltd and, come vintage, the shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes are trucked to Hardy's Tintara winery for crushing.

The link to the founder of Reynella Wines is also preserved through the underground cellar which John Reynell excavated in 1845. BRL Hardy still use Australia's oldest cellar as a museum and function room.
