Daw Park

Daw Park is central to the recently Heritage-listed 'model garden suburb' of Colonel Light Gardens. The 'model garden' was a town planning trend which developed in Adelaide's so-called Federation period of the early 1900s.

Charles Comton Reade, who gives his name to a number of local features, was the town planner who designed the suburb.

The Heritage listing preserves the unique design used by Reade to integrate homes, business premises, civic facilities, schools and churches with large and small reserves.

The original planning is faithfully mirrored in today's inner-southern suburb of wide, tree-lined streets of bungalow homes each of which has rear access from a lane that carries power and sewerage service lines.

Daw Park is a suburb in the municipality of the City of Mitcham where white settlement began in 1840. The original village green, which was at the centre of colonial life, remains today as the Mitcham Reserve, where the shaded picnic and play areas flank Brownhill Creek.

Befitting its age, Mitcham is dotted with some magnificent old colonial homes including Carrick Hill, a Tudor mansion set in expansive grounds, and Urrbrae House, which, along with the coach house and stables, forms an historic precinct on the Waite campus of Adelaide University.
