South Plympton

Bordering the Main South Road, the inner suburbs of Edwardstown and South Plympton are only 10km from the Adelaide CBD and well placed for day trips to the cluster of vineyards in the city's southern fringes and in the McLaren Vale.

They are also within a few minutes of some of Adelaide's finest metropolitan beaches including West, Somerton Park, Brighton and historic Glenelg.

It was beneath a stately old gum which, with the help of a few man-made supports, still stands on the Glenelg foreshore that the white history of South Australia began in 1836. The first settlers, who'd come ashore at Glenelg from HMS Buffalo, gathered round the tree to listen to a reading of the document proclaiming the state.

A replica of the first migrant ship is moored at the Holdfast Shores complex and Proclamation Day celebrations are held within the shadow of the old gum. Today Glenelg is the very model of a modern beachside resort bristling with relaxing bars, restaurants, cafes, an amusement precinct and boutique shops.
